English

Aim to register the Seventeen-Article Constitution in UNESCO's “Memory of the World”

Since an idea of “Sustainable Development” was proposed by the United Nations in 1987, “Sustainable” has been heard more and more in the business world. In order to realize the sustainable society required in the world, we need to build a sound material-cycle economy and society.

“和(WA)” is a Japanese word and concept that represents the spirit of 循環(JUNKAN) (circulation), 調和(CHOWA) (harmony), and 寛容(KANYO) (tolerance and forgiveness). This is the essential core of Eastern thought, derived from the providence of nature. Especially, 寛容(KANYO) which is combined tolerance with forgiveness is restated 許し(YURUSHI) in other word, and represents the spirit of 禊(MISOGI) that originally means being purified by clear water from mountains or forests in a traditional ritual.

With the globalization of economy and society, “Diversity” has been often heard in recent years. The idea is that the social development is brought by cultural, religious, ethnic and racial diversity. And I believe it comes from a spirit of 寛容(KANYO) that tolerates and forgives each other. In fact, the world needs “和(WA) Spirit”.

Since the “French Declaration of Human Rights” in 1789, humankind has significantly progressed mainly in some western countries, based on the ideas of “freedom, equality, and fundamental human rights”. However, these ideas derived from the West are not perfect because it has allowed to misuse war for business in the name of freedom, and the global inequality is becoming more widespread. Therefore, in addition to the wisdom of the West, by introducing the idea of “和(WA) Spirit” in the East which was born in Japan 1400 years ago, I think that humankind will step up to the next stage to achieve a truly happy society and world peace. Politics and economy have underlying concepts such as democracy and capitalism.
I am convinced that the new world in harmony with “和(WA) Spirit” will be realized someday in the future if the concept spreads all over the world.

The “French Declaration of Human Rights” and the “Great Charter of the Libertiesharter” which is the basis of the declaration, have already been registered as a UNESCO’s “Memory of the World”.
Therefore, I would like to convey “和(WA) Spirit” to the world by aiming to register the “Seventeen-Article Constitution” as the “Memory of the World” in 2030 which is the year of the achievement of SDGs.

English

There are many words with the kanji character "WA". WA-syoku (和食Japanese food), WA-fuku (和服Japanese clothing), WA-shi (和紙Japanese paper), WA-gashi (和菓子Japanese confectionery), WA-ka (和歌Japanese poetry), and so on. If we trace the roots of these words, we can find them in the first article of the "Seventeen-Article Constitution" written by Prince Shotoku, which states that "WA is the most precious thing in life. With these words, Prince Shotoku indicated the ideal state of Japan and the Japanese people. In other words, the origin of our Japanese identity lies in the spirit of "WA".

After the war, everything in our country was reset, and the Constitution and everything else was reestablished. Finally, the National Foundation Day was set on February 11, the same date as before the war, but at the time there were several other strong candidates, one of which was April 3, the date when the "Seventeen-Article Constitution" was enacted. In other words, the day on which the identity of the Japanese people was expressed was considered appropriate for the National Foundation Day. Therefore, April 3 can be called the second National Foundation Day.

More than 75 years have passed since the end of World War II, yet war and conflict continue to ravage the international community, and true world peace has yet to be achieved. The reason why our country has been able to avoid getting involved in wars during this period is because of the earnest desire of those who experienced wars to "never start a war again," which served as a deterrent.

However, now that the war generation is gone, such deterrence is about to disappear from our country. Therefore, we need a new deterrent to replace their desire. Fortunately, Japan has a world-class idea of peace, the "spirit of harmony" written by Prince Shotoku. We believe that our strong pride in this will be our next deterrent.

In the past, the Western nations, led by the United States, spread liberalism throughout the world. However, now that the ideology and economy have begun to fray, it is time for us Japanese to spread a new concept of "WA," a spirit of circulation, harmony, and tolerance based on the providence of nature, to the rest of the world. To this end, we Japanese must first awaken to the spirit of Prince Shotoku, which is the purpose of the "4.3 TAISHI: The Pride of Japan, Spreading the Spirit of Harmony to the World" dedication event.

The other purpose of the event is to repose the souls of those who suffered tremendous damage from the anti-Buddhist movement of the early Meiji period. As a result of the Shinto nationalization policy of the Meiji government, the Shinto/Buddhist Separation Order was issued on April 5, 1868, which led to the destruction of Buddhist temples, statues, Buddhist ritual implements, and scriptures in many places. Since the decree separating Shintoism and Buddhism was issued around the same time as April 3, this peace event is also meant as a memorial service for the repose of the souls of those who suffered the fierce persecution of the Buddhist world at that time.
